Optimal Multispecies Harvesting in the Presence of a Nuisance Species

Primary tabs

The need for ecosystem based fisheries management is well recognized, but substantial obstacles remain toward implementing these approaches given our current understanding of the biological complexities of the ecosystem along with the economic complexities surrounding resource use. This study develops a multispecies bioeconomic model that incorporates biological and technological interactions to determine the optimal effort and stock size for each species in the presence of a nuisance species. Simulations are then run according to optimal policies including and excluding the nuisance species to determine the impact of the nuisance species on fishery profits and stock abundances.
